Our Story, our Ethos

New Farm Bistro is located at the New Farm Bowls Club and is highly popular with locals, who are enjoying a dining experience to tantalise the tastebuds like never before.  To avoid disappointment, it’s a good idea to book ahead by calling the Club on 33582374. The dining area has been newly refurbished and is relaxed and inviting and Valerie is often seen “chewing the fat” with locals about all thing’s food - her passion!  We can cater for seating for up to 75 in the dining space with tables for 2 upwards. At New Farm Bistro we’re committed to creating interesting dishes with the emphasis on flavour using local producers. Valerie’s Anglo-Indian heritage brings a spicy twist to the menus, which were a hit on MKR which had her and daughter Courtney, catapult to the grand finale.  Their “Sweetly Spiced Sauce” sold in Coles stores nationwide and is now included in dishes on the Bistro menu. 

Bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge in Modern Australian cuisine, Head Chef Dan Sullivan has catered for high profile events including the 2018 Commonwealth Games, 3 Ashes Cricket Series at the Gabba and the Brisbane International Tennis just to name a few - so obviously Chef Dan is boss in the kitchen. 

Our A La Carte menu showcases Valerie’s heritage recipes, from robust spice laden curries to subtle but aromatic vegetarian side dishes and fresh raitas all carefully crafted from her own spice blends.  Chef Dan’s expertise comes to the forefront with dishes like his Slow Cooked Sirloin with truffle mash, Seared Salmon with Turmeric coconut sauce, Glazed Pork cutlet with fresh house slaw, hearty roasts with elaborate trimmings and a favourite has to be his Death by Chocolate Gluten Free Chocolate Brownie!  Did we mention we make our own chutneys, salad dressings and spice blends.

The menus including function platters combine flavours, ingredients and techniques to reflect lifestyle and tastes of our cosmopolitan area and the locals love it!.  Our patrons are usually surprised and delighted when they dine at the Bistro or taste our function menu with the quality, presentation and flavours on offer are not your typical “Bowls food” fare. 

We work with local suppliers who have the best quality produce.  Our meats are from local butchers Rayners Gourmet Meats and fresh produce from family run business Faranda.  We also partner with Petersen’s farm in Gympie for seasonal produce and boutique products.

Food doesn’t exist in a void; we strive to keep our menu in a state of evolution governed by the seasons with new techniques blending cultural influences with modern Australian – hopefully this will entice people to come to a Bowls club for an experience where food very much features.

Meet Our Chef

VALERIE FERDINANDS

Valerie is completely immersed in a food career on the back of the 2017 season of the popular Channel 7 series My Kitchen Rules which saw Valerie and her daughter Courtney representing QLD with their Anglo-Indian heritage food straight to the Grand Final.  The girls soared through the MKR competition receiving 10 out of 10’s from the judges who referred to the duo’s food as a “masterclass in spice”.  Winning the MKR sauce challenge saw their own “Sweetly Spiced Sauce” on the shelves of national grocery juggernaut Coles which sold out in the first 24hrs nationally with a second batch also selling out.  This demand had been unprecedented in the MKR seasons.


Valerie’s passion for cooking quality, tasty food using local producers is stronger than ever as she has run successful cooking classes, catering and dinners which she hasn’t advertised and has gained momentum from word of mouth recommendations.  She is also a food writer for local magazine Village News, presenter, recipe developer for cooking demonstrations which has seen her and daughter Courtney travel Australia for Channel 7, Style Magazine, Coles, Standard Food company, Modern Women’s Expo. 


Valerie is a passionate Brisbane foodie who has lived and worked in New Farm for over 20 years.  She is very much part of the local community and has been a patron of the local Neighbourhood centre for many years.  She is passionate about promoting Queensland’s fantastic fresh, tasty seasonal food and advocates buying local produce and products to support farmers and help local communities at every opportunity.   

Valerie has outgrown her space at home and couldn’t be more excited to team with talented chefs to bring some exciting food with flair to the Bowlo at New Farm.   Get ready to have your taste buds tantalized!
